Jon-David Headrick Selections is a national importer of small-production, artisinal wines from France, principally from the Loire Valley. The company is run and managed by Jon-David Headrick and is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The wines of the portfolio are selected by Jon-David and imported by European Cellars/Eric Solomon Selections, one of America’s preeminent importers of fine French, Spanish, and Portugese wines.
BACKGROUND Jon-David’s background has not always been in the wine business. After undergraduate studies, Jon-David managed high-end French restaurants before moving to Paris, France to complete an MBA in International Business. His goal at the time was to become involved in the corporate world, but after spending almost every weekend in Burgundy, his plans soon changed. Studying the wines of France during his time away from school, Jon-David determined that he wanted a career in the international wine trade.
Soon after MBA school, Jon-David took a position as the Director of Operations for the Eric Solomon Selections in New York City. After 6 months, he became the General Manager of the company and quickly moved into the wine marketing side of the business, traveling to France and acting as the primary liason with French properties. After 3 years, Jon-David formed a separate import company with the counsel and aid of Eric Solomon. As a wine lover who was passionate about the wines of Northern Europe (Loire, Burgundy, Champagne, Alsace, Germany, Austria), it was a natural fit for JD to concentrate on Northern France. The company was created out of Jon David's love of the wines of the Loire Valley combined with his conviction that the top estates were severely under-represented in the U.S.
PHILOSOPHY & PORTFOLIO The goal of Jon-David Headrick Selections is to be able to present the most complete, comprehensive, and quality-oriented portfolio from the Loire Valley that is imported into the United States. With both Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, the company seeks to present a Burgundian approach to terroir, offering both varietals from various soils and exposures from along the riverside. The company prefers to work with young growers who are using more progressive techniques with older vines and gives preference to organic and biodynamic farming. More than half of the properties in the portfolio are organic and all are harvested by hand in small baskets.
Currently Jon-David represents growers in the Loire appellations of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, Fiefs Vendéen, Anjou, Coteaux du Layon (including Bonnes Blanches), Savennières, Chinon, Bourgueil, St. Nicolas de Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Quincy. The company also works with one property in the Cotes du Luberon and is beginning to import grower Champagnes. |
